Does education teach values?

Right from my school debating, I always cited illiteracy as one of the root causes of most of the problems in India. One such problem was, “Safety for women in India.” This motivated me to work on initiatives that promote education.

I wish this had been a fake one; I would be more than happy. If this was true, what is the point of getting people educated when we report this kind of case from the premier Indian Institute of Technology(IIT)?

In my childhood, I heard of the cases of drugs being caught in airports, illegal drug transport in tribal areas, and many more instances of illegal consumption of drugs. My amateur mind thought that the illiteracy of those people would be a driving cause behind this. But this article is an eye-opener. Though I have heard of people engaging in illegal activities even in premier institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology(IITs), this is poignant.

Why the Indian education system is unable to teach basic moral values to students? What exactly should be changed?

There are diverse opinions of people on the above questions. Some say that education must teach moral values to the kids. Some comment on the parenting issues and some say it’s completely personal and we can’t change people's mindsets. In contrast, some people comment on girls’ behaviour and dressing. Well, every opinion may have its supporting statement and be correct in one incident, but we can’t consider these opinions universal facts. Every situation has its own reason, victim and accused. All we can wish for is, more strength for the victim, realization for the convicted, and above all, “we wish that it shouldn’t happen with anyone else in the future.”
